How to Search Cases by Name
A Washington County name search starts with one question. Which court family does the case belong to? Circuit, County, and Chancery cases ride on PAMEC. PAMEC serves as the public account layer for Mississippi Electronic Courts. Justice Court and city municipal matters have no countywide public search interface. Federal cases sit outside MEC entirely. One more caution: a name alone can pull up more than one person. Narrow the docket search with the court, the rough year, and the case type.
- Identify the court from the notice, citation, court paper, or known case type.
- For participating state trial-court cases, create or use a PAMEC account and select the Fourth Circuit or Ninth Chancery route.
- Search by the available name field after authentication, then compare the case type, court, and filing information rather than relying on a name match alone.
- For Justice Court or a city case, call or visit the local court office because no countywide public name-search page was found.
- When a result is incomplete, ask the clerk for the docket sheet or register of actions and whether the document itself is public.
The PAMEC query screen shows login, password, and a client-code prompt. Only then does a search form appear. Not every authenticated Washington County name-search option is open to guests. That limit matters. No one should promise a public guest search the court has never exposed.
Washington County Case Search Routes
Several offices hold Washington County records. The Washington County Circuit Clerk handles Circuit and County Court papers, civil and criminal. The Washington County Chancery Clerk keeps Chancery Court files: family, probate, land, and equity matters. Justice Court keeps its own district records. Municipal courts keep city matters. Youth Court is different. County Court also serves as Youth Court, and access carries special limits.
A remote result can point you toward the case. But the offices do not merge into one database. Fourth Circuit MEC and Ninth Chancery MEC use different CourtInfo and public-query addresses. So start with the court named in the case, then pick the site or phone line. That routing question answers more than forcing a name into the wrong system ever will.
Fast route: Find the court first, then search its docket or contact its clerk. Washington County has no single free countywide portal for every court type.
How to Search by Case Number
A case number is the fastest route into a Washington County docket. Just use the system that issued it. Type or read the number exactly. It should match what appears on the notice, citation, docket, or file. Never guess an abbreviation. Never invent a case-type code. And never run a federal number through state MEC. The official MEC pages do not publish a Washington County state case-number format before login.
The federal example O:YY-TY-#####-INI-RIN comes from the Northern District of Mississippi CM/ECF. It packs in division, year, case type, sequence, judge initials, and referral initials. That is not a Washington County Circuit, County, Chancery, Justice, or municipal format. A federal reference belongs in PACER or CM/ECF, not PAMEC.
What if the number is incomplete? Give the clerk the party name and an approximate filing year. Ask about the court's search practice. Do not fill missing digits with a pattern borrowed from another court. Also note that Washington County exposes no public state search screen for case type, filing date, attorney, setting date, or status before PAMEC authentication. A case lookup that respects these lines saves hours.
Washington County PAMEC Registration
PAMEC's official registration page lists three user types: Attorney, Non-Attorney, and Firm Administrator. The annual fee for Attorney and Non-Attorney accounts is $10. Access begins only after payment clears. Pay online with debit, credit, or e-check and you generally get same-day access. A mailed physical check slows things down. The service terms cover remote docket sheets, notices, and non-restricted documents. Generated pages carry charges, with quarterly billing.
| Registration field | Type | Requirement | Official format or note |
|---|---|---|---|
| User Type | Radio | Required | Attorney, Non-Attorney, or Firm Administrator. |
| First and Last Name | Text | Required | First name maximum 20 characters; last name maximum 50. |
| Primary and Confirm Email | Text | Required | The confirmation must match the primary email. |
| Preferred Username | Text | Required | Maximum six characters, with the site's stated two-character and four-number instruction. |
| Password and Confirmation | Password | Required | Both entries must match. |
| Captcha | Text | Required | Maximum six characters with a refresh or readability link. |
Those are registration fields, not confirmed post-login Washington County case-search fields. If account access fails, the query page links to username and password recovery, and that is the right next step.
What a Case Search Shows
At the docket level, a case search shows a lot. A Washington County case search can show the case identifier, court and division, case type, parties, opening date, case flags, docket entries, and settings. Where access permits, it may also point to a filed document. Remember what the docket is. It is a chronological register. It is not the complaint, order, judgment, transcript, or certified copy underneath it. A listed filing does not promise its image will open.
| Case identifier | The number used to locate the court register. Its Washington County state format is confirmed after authenticated access or by the clerk. |
|---|---|
| Court and division | Shows whether the result belongs to Circuit, County, Chancery, or another court path. |
| Caption and case type | Identifies the case title and its civil, criminal, family, probate, equity, or other category, subject to access rules. |
| Docket entry and setting | Lists recorded actions and may show date, time, judge, courtroom, and matter for a scheduled event. |
| Status or flag | Can show labels such as CLOSED, STAYED, SEALED, or Trial Pending. A label should be read with the newest entry. |
| Document reference | May link or refer to a filing, but access can be restricted, expired, chargeable, or limited to an authorized user. |
Note: A missing document image does not establish that a case was erased, dismissed, or never filed.
Washington County Search Boundaries
The county's general contact form is not a court search form. It collects contact information and comments, with no case-number, certification, document-type, payment, or turnaround fields. Use it for a general county question, never for a time-sensitive docket lookup. Circuit, County, or Chancery cases belong with the right clerk or the PAMEC route. Justice and municipal cases belong at their own court office. Washington County's contact page shows the general public contact form and the courthouse contact fields.

The form works fine for general county communication. It cannot replace a Washington County clerk's court-record procedure or an authenticated MEC search.
County vs Statewide Case Search
The choice in Washington County is not between two copies of the same database. PAMEC/MEC is the paid remote layer for participating state courts. The local clerk, by contrast, serves as the county confirmation point. It also offers free electronic access during regular business hours under MEC procedures. Justice court and municipal court paths stay local. So the real question is what you need. Remote access to a participating docket fits one channel. Hands-on help with a case in a particular court fits the other.
| PAMEC / MEC remote route | Washington County clerk route |
|---|---|
| Participating Circuit, County, and Chancery court dockets. | Court-specific local assistance, records questions, and free electronic public access during regular business hours. |
| Requires registration and processed payment for remote use. | Use the Circuit Clerk for Circuit or County cases and the Chancery Clerk for Chancery cases. |
| Can show docket sheets, notices, and available documents subject to access limits and charges. | Can confirm the correct local court, explain copy procedures, and identify whether a record is restricted. |
| Does not include federal, Justice Court, or all municipal records as one statewide search. | Does not make another court's independent file part of the clerk's own register. |
Statewide docket tools cannot reach a federal case tied to Washington County. For those matters, PACER is the public-access system, while CM/ECF handles federal filings and the docket itself.
Washington County Clerk Access
The MEC administrative procedures give the public free electronic access at the clerk's office during regular business hours. Court procedures and copy charges still apply. This in-person route matters when remote PAMEC access fails. It also matters when an account-gated search leaves you stuck. Simply ask the clerk for the docket sheet, also called the register of actions. Name the court first. Then give a case number, a party name, and an approximate filing year if you have one.
Phone numbers for the Washington County clerks follow the court you need. The Circuit Clerk handles Circuit and County Court at 662-378-2747. Chancery cases go through the Chancery Clerk at 662-332-1595. Justice Court shares one line, 662-332-0633. A clerk can walk you through the local search or copy process. Each office keeps its own court records, though. Do not ask one clerk to pull another court's file.
Note: The Mississippi Public Records Act of 1983 does not override judiciary rules. Nor does it override MEC procedures for court dockets and case documents.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
Public access to Washington County court records has real limits. The Fourth Circuit and Ninth Chancery CourtInfo pages carry SEALED and Sealed_Case flags. Those labels describe an access condition in the system, not any conclusion about the case. A MEC notice adds that certain documents may be limited to attorneys of record. Youth Court matters can be confidential, redacted, or restricted. So can minor-child details, home addresses, dates of birth, Social Security and taxpayer identifiers, and some financial data.
What should you do when a docket search returns a case number but no document? First scan the docket for a sealed, restricted, or expired-link entry. Then ask the right clerk what access category applies. Ask as well whether you need an authorization, an order, a motion, or a certified request. A missing image is never a case result. Mississippi Code Section 43-21-261 and its related rules matter most for Youth Court confidentiality.
Washington County Federal Case Searches
Federal cases arising in Washington County belong to the Greenville Division of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi. That puts civil, criminal, bankruptcy, and appellate matters outside Mississippi MEC entirely. For a federal docket search, the Northern District's case-information page points users to PACER and explains the separate role CM/ECF plays in filings.

Federal cases sit outside the Mississippi state system. So a Washington County docket search at the county clerk will not reach them. CourtListener and its RECAP archive sometimes carry federal filings that users have shared. Those contributions are spotty, though, and no substitute for the official database. PACER's pricing information sets the cost of that access. Pages run $0.10 each. A single document or docket report is generally capped at $3. If your quarterly charges total $30 or less, the fees are waived.

Those federal fees stand apart from anything the Washington County circuit clerk or PAMEC charges. They cover the federal access system only. Separately, the bankruptcy court's Greenville notice describes that location as hearings-only, with no resident bankruptcy clerk staff on site.

For bankruptcy paperwork, the Aberdeen bankruptcy clerk handles correspondence and administration. Online, PACER remains the way to pull the full federal docket for Washington County cases. A free option exists too. The MCVCIS voice system at 1-866-222-8029 gives case information over the phone. It cannot send you documents, though.
